As we come to the end of Volunteers Week 2024, we wanted to take a moment to remember those who’ve been involved with Hospital Radio Glamorgan that are no longer with us.

John Wilce (1949-2018)

John joined Hospital Radio Glamorgan (HRG) in 2003 at the same time as our current Chairman Jamie Pritchard.

John presented a regular show on a Sunday evening and was heavily involved behind the scenes at the station too. He passed away after a short illness in 2018 and in 2019, the studio was renamed after him to honour his dedication.

In 2023 on Sunday (4th June) which would have been John’s 74th birthday, Mal Thomas (who introduced John and Jamie to HRG) presented a special show alongside his son Michael and Jamie too for Volunteers Week

Karlo King (1945-2019)

Karlo King joined Hospital Radio Glamorgan in 1978 and holds the distinction of being our longest serving volunteer, having been involved for 41 years right up until his passing in December 2019.

Carlene and Daniel (Karlo’s Daughter and Son) recently chose to follow in their dad’s footsteps and take over presenting in the slot that was Karlo’s for several years. You can read more about that here.

Roger Thomas (1937-2023)

Roger joined Radio Glamorgan in 1992 and up until recently, presented a regular show on a Monday afternoon sharing his love, passion and knowledge of music.

Alongside presenting, during his time at the station he also worked tirelessly behind the scenes mostly as Treasurer.

Mal Thomas (1952-2024)

Mal originally joined Hospital Radio Glamorgan in 2001 and was instrumental in welcoming the late John Wilce and our chair Jamie Pritchard to the station in 2003.

Alongside his son Michael, Mal, John and Jamie presented regular shows on Friday and Sunday evenings as the ‘Motley Crew’ bringing a mix of fun, games and good music to listeners.

Mal decided to leave the station in 2010 due to work and family commitments, but made a triumphant return in 2022 to present on a Thursday and Friday morning. Mal passed away in 2024.
